Near Dark - the Coolest Vampire Movie Nobody Saw?
In 1987 a cool and original vampire movie hit the big screens. No, I'm not talking about The Lost Boys!
Starring Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Jenette Goldstein (Aliens), Bill Paxton (Aliens) |
I'm talking about a little film called Near Dark. It's a movie about the troubles of being a vampire. The vampires have come to make a little family over the years and they travel together, feeding and generally trying not to get discovered.
Trouble comes, as it must, and the vampires have to deal with it. No, I'm not getting into details here. It's cool, fun, maybe scary. Jesse Hooker, played by Henriksen, is a veteran of the Civil War and seems to really love his life and taking it from others. You should check it out!
A lot of folks think Near Dark did poorly because The Lost Boys overshadowed it. I don't think that's the case. Yes, The Lost Boys did better and is most remembered. However, Near Dark hit theaters first. I think it was just bad marketing that hurt the most. I think the studio just did not get the movie and its stars out there enough with an aggressive campaign. This is usually because the studio does not understand the movie, or someone there just doesn't believe in it. We are luck Near Dark got released at all so we could enjoy it!
If you've never seen it, you just might find something to add to your annual Halloween watchlist!
