Collection of the Accursed - Hand of Glory!

A man convicted of murder stands on the gallows.  The old man he stabbed to death rests in a grave near the church.

In the crowd, another man watches in anticipation.  He is there not to see the man hanged, but to claim a trophy when everyone else here has gone to their beds.

Only hours later, the murderer's body lies on a table in the third man's lair.
This man draws an axe and removes the right hand.  This is "the hand that did the deed".  In other circumstances he would need the left, but not tonight.  Setting this aside, he begins the process of skinning the corpse so he might render the fat into candles.

The hand will be pickled and dried in the manner prescribed in arcane texts.  The candle will be placed in the hand and lit, thus activating its powers.

This is the Hand of Glory.  Like all such objects, there are different rituals and myths surrounding just how to procure, prepare, and use it.  There are many stories about just what powers it bestows.

It is an excellent addition to any museum of the accursed!  Maybe the hand was cursed from the start by the evil of its previous owner.  Maybe it was cursed by the witch who created it to prevent anyone stealing it.  Maybe it was cursed by the one who stole it!

The Hand of Glory is sometimes portrayed with the fingers burning like candles.

To display this, it may be better to show some of the fingers partly burned and melted rather than actually burning.  I think flicker bulbs would be too cheesy.  Then again, a haunter with the skill to make a hand shaped oil lamp and the courage to light it might find the effect of a real burning hand to be worth it.

Happy Halloween!
